Jayboy Magdadaro, 15, Gets Scholarship After Saving 50 People

Young Hero from Cebu Receives Full College Scholarship

A full college scholarship was given to 15-year-old Jayboy Magdadaro from Liloan, Cebu, after he saved more than 50 people during Typhoon Tino. The scholarship, offered by Mabolo Barangay Captain Atty. Daniel Francis Arguedo, will cover all his school fees and includes a ₱3,000 monthly allowance for any course he wants to take.

Arguedo praised Jayboy for his bravery and said his actions should inspire other young people. Despite being only 15, Jayboy risked his own life to rescue residents trapped in deep floods in Barangay Jubay. Using a small boat and a lifebuoy, he spent hours saving children, pregnant women, and the elderly, bringing them to safety one by one.

Jayboy’s love for skimboarding helped him move through the strong floodwaters. His courage caught the attention of many people and groups who wanted to help him. The Gothong Southern Foundation gave him a new phone, clothes, and promised more support for his studies. Others donated groceries, shoes, a bike, and other basic needs for him and his family.

Aside from the scholarship from Barangay Mabolo, Jayboy also received scholarship offers from Kumon Liloan, San Antonio de Padua College, and a parent from Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, who promised to sponsor his tuition and allowance if he studies there.

Many people believe Jayboy deserves one of the country’s highest awards for bravery, the Order of Lakandula with the rank of Chief Commander. His selfless act during Typhoon Tino has touched the hearts of many and proved that courage and kindness can shine even in someone so young.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Kalmaegi or Typhoon Tino, struck the central Philippines, heavily affecting Cebu. Strong winds and floods killed over 200 people, injured hundreds, and displaced more than half a million. The storm damaged homes, roads, and power lines before moving on to Vietnam and Thailand, where it caused more destruction.
