TBA Studios Responds to Quezon Grandson’s Criticism

TBA Studios Defends Quezon Movie Amid Backlash

TBA Studios released an official statement following a heated incident involving the grandson of former President Manuel L. Quezon during a talkback session for their new film, Quezon, held in Makati City.

The controversy began when Ricky Quezon-Avanceña, the late president’s grandson, confronted the film’s director, Jerrold Tarog, and lead actor, Jericho Rosales, expressing deep disappointment over how his grandfather was portrayed. In an emotional outburst, Avanceña accused the filmmakers of dishonoring his grandfather’s legacy for fame and profit. He said they disrespected his grandfather’s memory, failed to understand the significance of what they had done, and were driven by money and recognition. He ended by telling them to be ashamed of themselves.

Despite the tense exchange, both Tarog and Rosales remained calm throughout the discussion. Shortly after the incident, TBA Studios issued a statement clarifying the historical foundation of the film. The company emphasized that Quezon was based on verified historical accounts, citing President Quezon’s autobiography and other credible historical sources.

The studio further explained that while some fictional elements were added for creative storytelling, the main events and details depicted in the film can be easily verified through public records, online research, or library materials. To promote transparency, TBA Studios also released a 48-page study guide and companion book containing a detailed list of historical documents, memoirs, and publications used in their research.

TBA Studios stressed that their goal was not to distort history but to encourage thoughtful discussion and reflection on the country’s past. They invited the public to watch the film before forming opinions, encouraging everyone to see it so they could develop their own understanding and join the ongoing conversation about the movie, history, and its relevance today. The statement concluded with a message of hope that Quezon would continue to inspire dialogue, reflection, and a deeper appreciation of the nation’s heritage.

Quezon is the latest historical drama from TBA Studios, the same production company behind acclaimed films such as Heneral Luna and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral. Starring Jericho Rosales as President Manuel L. Quezon and directed by Jerrold Tarog, the film aims to portray the personal and moral struggles of the former president, particularly during the crucial years leading up to World War II.
