Davao Cong. Paolo Duterte Reacts To Denial of Dad Rodrigo’s Interim Release Plea
PAOLO DUTERTE – The son of former President Rodrigo Duterte issued a warning after the International Criminal Court (ICC) interim release plea of his father was junked.
In June, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte applied for an interim release to the ICC but, after a few weeks, his lawyers asked the foreign court to hold off in making a decision as they await some information and documents that will back their appeal. The former President was arrested by the Philippine authorities who assisted the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in March.
Prior to the confirmation of charges hearing of the former President, Duterte’s camp renewed the interim release plea. According to Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, a “third country” supposedly agreed to host the interim release of her father. However, she did not disclose which nation is willing to host the interim release of the former President.
The confirmation of charges hearing of the former President was postponed after his lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman, claimed that Duterte is allegedly “not fit to stand trial”. According to the British-Israeli Lawyer, the former President is supposedly suffering from a ‘cognitive impairment’.
Kaufman also asked the ICC to adjourn all legal proceedings indefinitely. The ICC lawyer also expressed his hope that the Marcos Jr. administration will allow his client’s return to the Philippines for his interim release. However, recently, the ICC issued its decision rejecting the interim release plea of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
The foreign court claimed that the continued detention of Duterte is needed to ensure his attendance to the proceedings. It also cited in its ruling that the former President is a “flight risk” and his family’s criticisms of his arrest are also a factor. Recently, Davao Cong. Paolo Duterte issued a statement after the ICC junked the interim release bid of his father.
In his post on social media, Davao Cong. Paolo Duterte claimed that the ICC decision on his father’s interim release is allegedly “a gross and disgraceful miscarriage of justice”. According to him, it is supposedly not law but a “political theater”.
The younger Duterte stressed that the former President is allegedly not a flight risk and he is much loved in the Philippines. According to him, his father would have wanted nothing more but to stay in the country for as long as he lives.
Davao Cong. Amid the claims of the Duterte camp on the former President’s health, the ICC prosecutors recommended three (3) medical experts to assess the fitness of former Pres. Duterte to stand trial.
