Robin Padilla Denies Flashing Middle Finger During National Anthem

Robin Padilla: “Hindi po namin puwedeng gawing kabastusan ito”

ROBIN PADILLA – The actor-turned-senator has strongly denied accusations that he flashed his middle finger while singing the Philippine national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, during a Senate plenary session.

In a Facebook Live broadcast on the evening of September 11, 2025, Padilla appeared visibly upset as he addressed a news report claiming he made an obscene gesture. The report alleged that during the opening of the Senate session on September 8, Padilla secretly raised his middle finger while pretending to place his hand over his chest in respect for the national anthem. The article even included a photo showing his right hand on his chest with what appeared to be his middle finger raised.

Padilla expressed deep disappointment, especially toward the news organization that published the article, which he considered a long-time ally. He explained that what was mistaken for a vulgar gesture was, in fact, a religious expression.

According to Padilla, as a devout Muslim, placing his index finger on his chest while singing symbolizes the phrase “La ilaha illa Allah” — which means, “Walang ibang Diyos na dapat sambahin maliban sa Allah.” He said this gesture represents the foundation of his faith and his devotion to God.

Padilla explained that the gesture is sacred in his faith, symbolizing that God comes first above all. Placing his hand on his chest while singing the national anthem is his way of showing both devotion to God and love for the Philippines.

Padilla became emotional as he stated, “Magpapakamatay na lang po ako, hindi ko po yan magagawa.” He pleaded with the public not to believe the misleading report, saying it hurt not only him but also his family, particularly his wife, TV host Mariel Rodriguez, who was deeply troubled by the accusations.

To clear his name, Padilla presented clearer evidence showing that it was his index finger — not his middle finger — that was raised. Many people encouraged him to take legal action, but he chose to entrust the matter to God, saying that seeking revenge would go against his faith and that Allah would ultimately deliver justice and reward him for his patience.
