Former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson Speaks on Helping Marcos Jr.’s 2022 Election Bid
CHAVIT SINGSON – The former Ilocos Sur Governor who endorsed Pres. Bongbong Marcos in 2022 revealed his role in his journey towards the presidency.
Pres. Bongbong Marcos and Vice Pres. Sara Duterte were running mates in the 2022 Elections. Duterte was reportedly decided to run for her re-election as Davao City Mayor then but she was convinced to be the vice presidential candidate under Marcos Jr.’s bid.
Amid their rift now, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte previously claimed that Pres. Bongbong Marcos was allegedly not confident in beating then-Vice Pres. Leni Robredo in the 2022 Elections so he asked her to be his running mate. Prior to the election, the Vice President is already friends with presidential sister and Sen. Imee Marcos.
Presidential sister and Senator Imee Marcos has previously apologized to Vice Pres. Sara Duterte for convincing her to run alongside her brother, Pres. Bongbong Marcos. The deep rift between the Dutertes and the Marcoses now is no secret to the Filipino people but the Senator visibly took the side of the Duterte family on the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Recently, amid the flood control issue in the Philippines now, former Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson revealed that it was also Sen. Imee Marcos who called him then to ask for help for the candidacy of her brother. In a press conference, the former Governor claimed that now-Pres. Bongbong Marcos initially wanted to run for vice president in 2022.
“Ikwento ko na lang paano naging presidente itong BBM. Tinawag ako ni Sen. Imee Marcos, ‘Manong Chavit can you help us for the reelection of Bongbong dahil dinaya lang?’sabi niya,” the former Ilocos Sur Governor said based on a post of Cinema Bravo.
According to Chavit Singson, he told Sen. Imee Marcos to call the leaders in the North and she used his name in asking for a meeting with them. The former Ilocos Sur Governor claimed that the said meeting was held at the residence of the Marcoses.
“Tinawag nila sa bahay nila dumating ang mga congressman, governors, mayors. Sabi ni Sen. Imee, “Thank you for coming so we could start the early campaign of Bongbong for vice president dahil dinaya siya,” Singson said.
During the press con, the former Ilocos Sur Governor claimed that he laid down his suggestion to the Marcoses over the vice presidential bid of now-Pres. Bongbong Marcos. According to him, he frankly told Marcos Jr. that cannot win against Sara Duterte who was Davao Mayor back then.
“Alam natin lahat, napakalakas ni Sara ngayon walang kalaban. Now, gusto mo vice president? Mag-campaign na tayo nang maaga. Mag-file ka ng vice president, marami kang makakalaban niyan. Kung si Sara sa president wala ka ring laban at the time,” he claimed.
During the press con, Chavit Singson admitted that he introduced to now-Pres. Bongbong Marcos the suggestion of filing his candidacy for president and sliding down for vice president if now-Vice Pres. Sara Duterte runs for the presidential position. According to him, in that way, Marcos Jr. will be safe.
“So ang suggestion ko, mag-file muna tayo for president para pag nag-file si Sara, you slide down for vice president protected ka na,” the former Ilocos Sur Governor said.
Singson claimed that the Marcoses thanked him over the plan for his 2022 election bid. He endorsed Marcos Jr. in the 2022 Elections. However, recently, amid the turmoil in the Philippine government now, he spoke against the President.
Amid the flood control issue in the country now, Chavit Singson stressed that Marcos Jr. is allegedly part of the problem over the flood control corruption. According to him, the probe should start in Ilocos Norte.
