Photo of Arjo Atayde With Sarah and Curlee Discaya Resurfaces
ARJO ATAYDE – A photo of actor-turned-politician with contractors Curlee and Sarah Discaya has resurfaced online, sparking controversy amid a Senate investigation into alleged corruption involving multi-billion-peso flood control projects.
The photo quickly circulated on social media, raising questions about Atayde’s connection to the couple. Addressing the issue, Atayde explained that the meeting took place in 2022 when the Discayas made a casual visit to his district office. He emphasized that it was not an official meeting, saying they only exchanged greetings and took a photo. “It was a quick ‘hi, hello’ and picture-taking since it wasn’t a planned meeting. It was the first and last time I met with them. We never talked anything about any project. And I’ve never dealt with them,” Atayde clarified.
The controversy began when the Discayas, well-known contractors flagged by President Bongbong Marcos, testified before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee. During the hearing, Curlee Discaya read a sworn statement accusing several lawmakers and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials of demanding commissions — allegedly ranging from 10% to 25% of project funds — in exchange for approving or facilitating contracts. Curlee claimed that if they refused to comply, officials would create obstacles such as contract terminations or right-of-way issues that would delay or stop their projects.

Among those named by the Discayas were high-profile lawmakers, including House Speaker Martin Romualdez, former House Appropriations Chair Zaldy Co, Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, Marikina Rep. Marcy Teodoro, and several others. Arjo Atayde’s inclusion in the list shocked many, given his background as a respected actor and his relatively recent entry into politics.

Curlee further claimed he sent text messages to lawmakers and DPWH officials, including Atayde, asking them to return millions allegedly taken from him. He specifically mentioned PHP60 million supposedly given to Atayde’s father, businessman Art Atayde, which he now wanted back. According to Curlee, none of the recipients responded, which he described as a “test” to see who would stand by them amid the ongoing probe.
