PMA Condemns Ramon Tulfo for Publicly Shaming a Doctor
PMA vs. TULFO – The Philippine Medical Association has strongly criticized journalist Ramon Tulfo for what it described as publicly shaming a doctor.
The issue began after Tulfo posted on Facebook, questioning what he perceived as a lack of consideration from a specialist at the Philippine Heart Center. He claimed that the mother of his friend, Philip Gabas, could not be discharged from the hospital because the attending specialist was allegedly charging ₱85,000. Tulfo expressed his disapproval, stating that the hospital and doctors were charging excessively, and appealed for compassion from the physician involved.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 11, the PMA responded firmly, condemning Tulfo’s post for singling out and embarrassing a surgeon online. The organization emphasized that professional fees for doctors can vary depending on several factors, including the complexity and type of service provided, as well as the physician’s level of expertise.

The PMA explained that each doctor has the right to determine the value of their professional services, guided by a relative value scale used in the Philippines. They stressed that, based on the accounts of the medical services provided in this case, both the hospital charges and the doctor’s fees were within ethical and acceptable standards of practice.

The association also called for greater respect toward healthcare professionals, highlighting their vital role in preserving life and ensuring patient recovery. They urged the public to focus on fostering an environment of support and appreciation for the medical community.

The PMA concluded with a pointed reminder to Tulfo and the public: the patient in question had been treated, saved from a life-threatening condition, and was ready to be discharged. Instead of receiving gratitude for the care and recovery, the physician was met with public criticism. The organization described such treatment as unfair and harmful to the dedication and service of healthcare workers.
