PNP K9 Dog Sparks Concern Over Its Condition

Concerns Raised Over the Condition of PNP K9 Dog

ANIMAL KINGDOM FOUNDATION – The animal welfare organization has released an open letter addressed to the officers and leadership of the Philippine National Police (PNP) K9 Group, expressing deep concern over the condition of a K9 dog recently featured in a Philippine Star article. The photo showed the service dog looking extremely thin and possibly neglected—prompting strong reactions from animal welfare advocates.

In the letter, AKF reminded the PNP K9 Group of its responsibility not only to train and deploy service animals but also to ensure their proper care and well-being. The organization emphasized that under Republic Act No. 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines, as amended by RA 10631, animals used for work or public service must be provided with sufficient food, clean shelter, and medical care. This law applies to everyone, including government institutions.

AKF stressed that K9 dogs are not just tools—they are brave, loyal, and silent partners in protecting the nation. Their welfare, the group stated, is not a secondary issue but a legal and moral duty.

The foundation respectfully called on the PNP K9 Group to investigate the condition of the dog in question, provide immediate veterinary care, and conduct a thorough review of all current K9 dogs under their care. They also urged the group to strengthen care protocols to prevent similar cases in the future.

AKF believes that service dogs are heroes in their own right and deserve better treatment. They expressed hope that the PNP will act quickly and uphold the respect and dignity their canine partners truly deserve. Through this letter, AKF aims to shine a light on the unseen sacrifices of K9 dogs—and to ensure that those who protect us are also protected.
