Two Public Officials Die in Davao Trail Run
TRAIL RUN – Two well-known public figures tragically died during the Bukindaw X Santo Tomas Mountain Trail Ultra 2025 on Sunday, August 4. The victims were Klent John Brua, the husband of New Bataan Mayor Bianca Cualing-Brua, and Montevista councilor Eric Joseph Taping.
According to reports, event organizers started a rescue operation after Brua and Taping failed to reach the finish line. Brua was found unconscious and was declared dead on arrival at the Santo Tomas Municipal Health Center. Taping, 33, experienced vomiting and extreme weakness before being rushed to the hospital, where he later died.
Police believe heat stroke caused both deaths, as the temperature during the race was very high. Authorities are now checking if the event organizers followed the proper safety rules. Police Major Eduardo Corpuz, Sto. Tomas PNP commander, said there should have been safety and medical stations every seven kilometers, but early findings show there may have been lapses in preparation.

The provincial government of Davao de Oro expressed deep sadness over Taping’s death, praising his dedication to the “kaLAMBOan” program and his loyal service to the public. They said his efforts will be remembered as an inspiration and an honor.
Taping’s brother, Coy Coy, shared that trail running had been part of their lives since 2012. He said that on August 4, 2025, the trail took his brother to a place he could not yet follow, but he will carry his brother’s strength and inspiration with him in every step.

This tragedy has brought attention to the dangers faced by athletes in extreme outdoor events, especially in very hot weather. The deaths of Brua and Taping have started conversations about the need for strict safety measures in long-distance races.
Both men were remembered not only for their public service and leadership but also for their passion for sports and active living. Their sudden passing is a sad reminder of the importance of safety in such events and a tribute to lives lived with purpose, service, and love for the community.
