Children in Uniform Seen Begging in Manila

New Street Begging Tactic Involving Kids?

NEW MODUS? – Netizens have raised concerns over a viral post describing a possible new scheme of street begging involving children wearing school uniforms in Manila.

A motorist shared his experience on Reddit, expressing frustration over what he described as a “pity tactic.” He said that several times throughout the day, children dressed as students knocked on his car window asking for coins. On the fourth instance, he noticed three children wearing backpacks and very dirty school uniforms.

According to the motorist, incidents like this have increased since a video of the so-called “Sampaguita Girl” went viral—a young girl in a school uniform selling flowers inside a mall. Online reactions poured in, with many expressing sympathy for the children but also frustration over the lack of action.

One commenter said they felt sorry for the children, believing they were being used by syndicates. Another added that this “pity tactic” has been used for a long time. Someone even remarked that, since the old strategy of carrying a baby is no longer effective, these groups are now trying new methods.

Many also criticized the authorities, saying that police have seen these incidents but continue to ignore them. One frustrated netizen said they had lost respect for the police due to inaction.

To recall, in December last year, the so-called Sampaguita Girl made headlines after a video surfaced showing a heated argument between her and a mall security guard. In the video, the guard asked her to leave the premises, explaining that vendors were not allowed. The situation escalated, leading to a physical altercation. The guard reportedly destroyed her flower garlands, and Jenny reacted by hitting him with what remained. The guard was later dismissed, and the video sparked strong reactions online.
