UP Mourns the Loss of Student Sophia Coquilla

JUSTICE FOR SOPHIA – The University of the Philippines (UP) has expressed deep concern and sadness over the tragic death of one of its students, Sophia Coquilla, who was found dead inside her home in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on July 9, 2025. Sophia was a student at UP Diliman, and her untimely passing has brought grief to the entire UP community.

In an official statement posted on Facebook on July 11, the UP System conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Sophia’s family and friends while strongly condemning the incident. The university described it as a heartbreaking act that ended a life full of promise and took away a bright mind and a future leader from the nation.

The university also called on the authorities to conduct a full and transparent investigation, stressing that no family should be left without answers and that those responsible must be held accountable.

According to initial police reports, Sophia’s body was discovered by her parents. Investigators believe the possible motive was robbery, as some personal items—including her cell phone, laptop, and watch—were missing from the scene.

So far, three of the four individuals believed to be involved have been arrested. Two of the suspects are minors—a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old male. Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate the fourth suspect and to uncover the full details of the case.

Sophia is remembered as a kind, intelligent, and promising young woman. Her passing has deeply affected not only the UP community but also many others across the country. The university continues to call for justice while standing in solidarity with her loved ones during this difficult time.
