In her message for the National Disaster Resilience Month, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte stressed that the country is facing more than 20 typhoons every year. According to her, the storms last year were stronger and the natural calamity of this type may be “unpredictable” this year because of the increasing impacts of climate change.

In her message, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte recalled the approach of the previous administration led by her father, former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, towards natural calamities. She stressed that it is a priority that the communities are prepared for the calamities to avoid casualties and widespread damages of properties.

“Under former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte’s administration, the Philippine government shifted its approach from mere disaster awareness to actively-building disaster resilience. Prayoridad nating masigurong ang mga komunidad ay handa at kayang tumugon sa mga kalamidad,” the Vice President said.

According to Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, the country’s preparedness against calamities is a foundation of our strength as a nation. She expressed that we will be successful in fighting natural disasters if we will help in ensuring that each family in our community has enough knowledge about unfortunate incidents.

The Vice President also gave an update on the tree planting campaign of the OVP. According to her, more than 300,000 trees were planted last year.

“The Office of the Vice President’s PagbaBAGo: A Million Learners and Trees Campaign planted over 300,000 trees last year creating national shields from floods and landslides,” Duterte said.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte called on every Filipino this National Disaster Resilience Month “to become proactive stewards of their communities”. She cited the following ways to be part of the move:

  • Plant trees and join our organized clean-up drives.
  • Turn on NDRRMC alerts.
  • Build your family’s emergency kit.
  • Join earthquake drills.
  • Know your nearest evacuation center.
  • Share awareness posts.

According to the Vice President, the stories of every Filipino can help save lives. In her message posted on her social media page, she stressed that we can do more through helping each other.

“Sa ating pagkilos, sa ating paghahanda, nariyan ang pangako ng isang ligtas at matatag na kinabukasan na maipamamana natin sa ating mga anak. Mahalin natin ang Pilipinas para sa Diyos, sa bayan, at sa pamilyang Pilipino,” Duterte said in her post.

Amid the issues surrounding her office’s budget, the Office of the Vice President received an “Unmodified Opinion” rating from the Commission on Audit. Malacañang recently reacted to the COA Unmodified Opinion on the budget report of Duterte’s office.
