Labeled an Addict for ‘Street Surfing,’ Now Graduates from UP
MISUNDERSTOOD SOUL – Jave Arnaiz went viral years ago when a 15-second clip of him “street surfing” on a broken skateboard in Cebu caught the internet’s attention. While many found it amusing and entertaining, others were quick to judge him harshly. He was labeled an addict, insulted, and even received death threats—all because of a short video. People mocked him without knowing who he was or the struggles he silently endured.
Behind the scenes was a young man simply trying to survive life’s challenges. Growing up in poverty, Jave used creativity and joy to rise above his circumstances. However, when the video went viral, he faced harsh judgment from strangers who never took the time to understand him.
Instead of being crushed by their words, Jave used the hate as motivation. He turned every insult into fuel. He worked hard, studied harder, and trusted God throughout his journey. In a powerful message he shared, Jave said, “I never let their judgment define me. I turned every insult into fuel, every doubt into a reason to fight harder.”

Today, Jave is a proud graduate of the University of the Philippines—one of the most respected universities in the country—a true testament to his resilience, faith, and determination.
He now encourages others who’ve been mocked or misunderstood to remember that they are more than what people say. “You are purpose. You are strength. And with faith, grit, and grace, you’ll rise above it all,” he wrote.

Jave’s story is a reminder not to judge others based on appearances or a single moment caught on camera. It’s a call to value kindness, understanding, and never underestimate someone’s strength simply because of their background. From being unfairly judged as an addict to becoming a UP graduate, Jave proves that nothing is impossible with faith and perseverance.
