Giselle Sanchez Regrets Playing Cory Aquino; Darryl Yap Responds
DARRYL YAP – The director and writer responded to the recent statement made by actress-host Giselle Sanchez, who expressed regret over portraying former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino in the controversial film Maid in Malacañang.
In a preview of the upcoming episode of The Men’s Room, Giselle admitted that she now regrets accepting the role. She shared that some people questioned her decision, reminding her that she is a graduate of the University of the Philippines (UP). Giselle said she should have considered her background and the possible impact on the country before taking on the part. “Hindi ko inisip, eh. Kasi inisip ko lang, artista ako,” she said.
On Friday, July 11, Darryl Yap released his reaction to Giselle’s remarks. He said he understood her feelings and even revealed that the production team also shared in her regret. “kasi lahat ng kasama sa pelikula, artista man o nasa likod ng camera ay may taglay na kahandaan sa opinyon ng publiko—paninira man o papuri,” he said. “Si Giselle ang talagang nabasag at naapektuhan, siya ang inalala ng team.”

Yap explained that he prepared the cast and crew for backlash, not just because of the film’s sensitive nature, but also because it was a personal project. He emphasized that he chooses to work only with people he truly wants to collaborate with, regardless of how many that may be.
However, Yap questioned the criticism Giselle received for being a UP graduate and still accepting the role. “Bakit? Iba ba ang hangin sa UP?” he asked. He also pointed out the contradiction of those who are quick to speak their minds but struggle to accept opposing views.

Despite the issue, Yap maintained his respect for individual artistic choices and expressed gratitude for being part of the industry—whether he’s on someone’s “like” or “dislike” list.
As of now, Giselle Sanchez has not issued a response to Yap’s statements.
