Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero Speaks on SC Ruling over Duterte’s Impeachment Case

CHIZ ESCUDERO – The Senate will decide on the Supreme Court ruling over the impeachment case of VP Sara Duterte on August 6 as per the Senate President.

Prior to the opening of the 20th Congress, the Supreme Court released its decision on the petition filed by Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, Atty. Israelito Torreon, and many others seeking for the dismissal of the impeachment case filed against her. The Supreme Court declared the Articles of Impeachment against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte “unconstitutional” and it gained different reactions from the people.

The senators were also mixed reactions over the decision of the Supreme Court. According to the high court, the impeachment complaint against Duterte did not follow the one year rule in the Constitution. The court also found that the Vice President was denied of her right for due process. Despite the ruling, it maintained that the decision does not dismisses the charges filed against her.

The camp of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte welcomed the decision of the Supreme Court on the impeachment complaint filed against her. According to Atty. Michael Poa, the spokesperson of Duterte’s legal team, they remain prepared to address the allegations against her in the proper time and forum.

Following the decision of the Supreme Court, there are questions and doubts as to whether or not the Senate will proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. The spokesperson of the upper chamber previously claimed that the senators will vote on whether or not to proceed with Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

Recently, after he was reelected as the chief of the Senate, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero expressed his belief that it will be safer for the Senate to decide on Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s case without convening as an impeachment court. He also claimed that he personally sees no reason for the Senate not to follow the decision of the Supreme Court.

Recently, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero also revealed some details during their caucus. He confirmed that the impeachment case of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte was mentioned but they have agreed to discuss it on a later date. Based on a report on GMA News, the senators have agreed to discuss the Supreme Court ruling over Duterte’s impeachment complaint on August 6.

According to Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero, to have it next week is a decision they have agreed on and put on record to give “ample and sufficient time” to the senators to study the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court made its ruling in a 97-page decision. Based on the report, the ruling of the high court came with a 13-0 voting among the judges.

Previously, Malacañang expressed its respect on the Supreme Court ruling over the impeachment case of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte but made a clarification.
