Anjo Yllana Admits Backing Out of Wedding with Sheryl Cruz Because of FPJ

Why Anjo Yllana Didn’t Marry Sheryl Cruz

ANJO YLLANA – The actor and comedian opened up about a personal chapter in his life — the time he suddenly disappeared after proposing to actress Sheryl Cruz.

In a light but honest interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Anjo admitted that fear was the reason behind it — specifically, his fear of Sheryl’s uncle, the late movie legend Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ). Anjo shared that he truly intended to marry Sheryl and had already proposed.

But things changed when he learned he would need to formally speak with FPJ first. “So nagkaroon ako ng cold feet,” he said with a smile. “Sabi ko, ‘Baka bugbugin ako.’ Ganu’n ‘yung isip ko noon kasi bata pa ako eh, first time ko magpapakasal.”

He admitted that instead of facing the situation, he simply disappeared. “Iyon nga ‘yung sinabi niya noong hinulog niya ‘yung bomba ng interview. Totoo ‘yun, na bigla na lang ako nawala kasi ‘yun ang rason,” he said.

About ten years later, the two reunited for a show. During one of their scenes, Sheryl had to slap Anjo — and he wasn’t prepared for how strong it would be. “Pag sa akin, ang lakas,” he laughed. “Kasi nilabas niya ‘yung galit niya ng sampung taon.”

Looking back, Anjo shared the story with humor and a bit of regret, revealing a more relatable and human side of himself. His honesty offered a glimpse into how fear and emotional immaturity can sometimes affect relationships — even when intentions are good.

Meanwhile, Anjo Yllana is an actor, comedian, TV host, and politician. He rose to fame in the 1990s through the sitcom Abangan Ang Susunod Na Kabanata, where he played Dino Tengco. He also starred in popular shows like Ober Da Bakod, Palibhasa Lalake, and hosted Eat Bulaga! for over 20 years.
