Security Guard Fulfills His Lifelong Dream of Graduating
JULIAN AVILA – A 49-year-old security guard at the University of Caloocan City (UCC) has proven that it’s never too late to follow a dream. After years of hard work and sacrifice, Julian finally graduated with a Bachelor of Public Administration degree—something he had dreamed of for a long time.
For many years, Julian worked quietly as a security guard, always present on campus and making sure everyone was safe. But behind his calm and steady presence, he carried a dream: to finish college. He put this dream on hold for years to focus on what mattered most—his family. As a father of four, Julian chose to put his children first, setting aside his personal ambitions to give them a better life.
However, Julian never fully let go of his dream. With patience, hard work, and the right opportunity, he knew he could still achieve it. Thanks to the City Government of Caloocan, he was given a chance to study while keeping his job through UCC’s evening classes for government employees. By day, Julian stayed at his post as a security guard. By night, he became a student—fighting exhaustion but never losing sight of his goal.

Originally from the province, Julian moved to Manila with simple hopes and quiet determination. After years of waiting and working, he finally earned his diploma. But for Julian, it’s about more than just a piece of paper—it’s about proving to himself that dreams don’t expire.

Julian expressed his deep gratitude to the University of Caloocan City and to Mayor Dale Along Malapitan, whose support made this opportunity possible. His story is a simple yet powerful reminder: no matter your age or how long your dreams have been delayed, it’s never too late to make them come true.
