Retired Father Invests PHP44M to Support Daughter’s Learning Center

Father Invests in Daughter’s Dream

Poh Thong Ang, a 71-year-old Singaporean businessman and a father, spent his younger years building a successful heavy machinery rental company. Through hard work and perseverance, he was able to grow the business, provide for his family, and raise three children. Upon reaching the age of 60, Poh decided to retire due to age and various health issues, choosing instead to focus on his well-being. He eventually sold his company.

Among his children, his eldest daughter, Jeline, followed a different path. She founded The Music Scientist, a unique enrichment center in Singapore that integrates music, sensory play, and science for children aged four months to six years. The business began operations in 2017.

In a recent interview published by The Independent Singapore on June 15, 2025, Jeline shared how crucial her father’s support was in starting her business. She said her father took a leap of faith—not for himself, but for her—and invested S$1 million (about PHP44.5 million) to turn her vision into reality. She admitted that she couldn’t have launched the company without that investment.

But Poh didn’t just offer financial support. He also helped build the school’s interiors, working on carpentry tasks even while recovering from heart surgery. He also took care of his grandchildren so Jeline could fully focus on running the business. According to her, he never tried to take over but instead ensured she had a solid foundation to stand on.

Reflecting on his own journey, Poh shared that he felt fortunate to have started his business at a time and place where hard work truly paid off. Today, he acknowledges that the business world is much tougher, which is why he remains committed to supporting his daughter in every way he can.

When asked if growing a business had been difficult, Poh said that knowing when to let go is just as important as knowing when to push forward. Initially, he thought Jeline’s venture was just a hobby. To his surprise and joy, it flourished—especially during the pandemic.

Before founding The Music Scientist, Jeline worked as a contracts manager and balanced motherhood with her career. This experience helped shape her hands-on and relevant teaching approach. Though Poh isn’t one to say “I love you” out loud, Jeline deeply appreciates his unwavering, quiet support that speaks volumes.
