Pura Luka Vega Acquitted of Cybercrime Over ‘Ama Namin’ Performance

Pura Luka Vega Cleared of Cybercrime Charges

PURA LUKA VEGA – The Manila Regional Trial Court has officially acquitted the controversial drag artist, also known as Amadeus Fernando Pagente, of charges filed under the Cybercrime Prevention Act (Republic Act 10175). The case stemmed from a widely criticized performance in which Vega appeared in a Jesus-inspired costume and performed a remix of the Christian prayer “Ama Namin” (Our Father), drawing public backlash online.

In a 20-page decision released by Manila RTC Branch 184, Presiding Judge Czarina Samonte-Villanueva ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Vega committed a crime through the performance. The case was originally filed by the Social Media Broadcasters of the Philippines Inc. (SMBPI), which claimed that Vega’s act was offensive and possibly violated cybercrime laws due to its perceived disrespect toward religious beliefs. However, the court emphasized that artistic expression—even when it challenges traditional norms—is not automatically criminal unless it meets the legal standards of harm or malicious intent.

The ruling highlighted the need to balance freedom of expression with public sensibilities and affirmed that not all offensive content is necessarily unlawful. As a result, Vega was acquitted of all charges, marking a legal victory not only for the drag artist but also for advocates of artistic freedom and LGBTQ+ rights.

Meanwhile, Pura Luka Vega, a well-known figure in the Philippine drag scene, rose to national attention not only for bold performances but also for sparking important discussions around faith, gender, and freedom of expression. Their viral performances have received both praise and criticism, particularly from religious groups. Despite the backlash, Vega has continued to use their platform to raise awareness about issues affecting queer communities in the Philippines.
