Lotto Winner Accuses Ex of Stealing Jackpot
CANADA – A man from Winnipeg has filed a legal complaint against his former girlfriend after she allegedly “ghosted” him and ran off with his lotto winnings worth five million Canadian dollars (about PHP209 million).
The man, identified as Lawrence Campbell, claimed he had trusted his then-girlfriend, Krystal Ann McKay, to hold the winning ticket. In January 2024, Campbell purchased a 6/49 lotto ticket from a convenience store, but since he didn’t have his wallet with him, he gave the ticket to McKay, with whom he was in a committed relationship at the time. A few days later, he found the ticket at a friend’s house and scanned it—only to discover it was a jackpot winner.
When they went to verify the ticket at a lottery office, Campbell was told he couldn’t claim the prize himself due to not having valid government-issued ID. A representative advised that McKay, who physically had the ticket, should claim the prize instead. On January 30, the couple appeared at a press conference, where McKay publicly stated that the ticket was a “birthday gift” from Campbell—a statement he appeared to support.

The winnings were deposited into McKay’s account, as Campbell didn’t have a bank account. However, shortly after, McKay disappeared and stopped returning to their shared hotel room. Campbell later discovered her with another man. McKay ended the relationship and completely cut off all contact—blocking his calls, social media, and even filing a restraining order against him.
Campbell’s lawyer argues that the lottery corporation gave misleading advice that contributed to the situation. Legal complaints have been filed not only against McKay but also against the Western Canada Lottery Corporation and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.

On June 12, 2025, a Manitoba judge issued a temporary court order preventing McKay from selling or giving away any valuables over $3,500, including property and vehicles. She is also required to provide a list of all her assets.
McKay, through her lawyer, denies the allegations and is expected to submit a formal defense. Meanwhile, Campbell expressed deep disappointment, saying he believed he was in a loving and healthy relationship.
