DOJ Dismisses Case Against Jay Sonza

Jay Sonza Not Liable for Sedition, Says DOJ

DOJ – The Department of Justice has officially dismissed the inciting to sedition complaint filed against veteran broadcaster and blogger Jay Sonza.

The charge was related to alleged violations of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA 10175) and was filed by PNP-CIDG Director PBGen. Nicolas Torre III. In a resolution signed by Senior Assistant State Prosecutor Amanda Felipe, the DOJ found insufficient evidence to pursue the case in court, citing a lack of prima facie evidence or reasonable grounds to proceed with a trial.

The complaint stemmed from allegations that Sonza was responsible for circulating misleading photos online, claiming that Gen. Torre had been hospitalized. These claims prompted Torre to take legal action, stating that the false reports affected not only his reputation but also his family. Torre clarified that he was never hospitalized and insisted that the photos were manipulated. He had planned to file cyber libel charges against Sonza and other vloggers in connection with these claims.

Following the dismissal of the case, Sonza posted on Facebook, expressing his gratitude to his legal team, SMNI executives, and Pastor Apollo Quiboloy. He celebrated the outcome with the words: “Justice is done. Walang sagka sa katotohanan at malayang pamamahayag at pandarahas sa paghahayag. CASE DISMISSED!”
