Tourist Swims Across Sea After Running Out of Fare in Biliran

Tourist Rescued After Swimming Between Islands in Biliran

BILIRAN – A tourist named “Nathan,” 37, from Ormoc City, was rescued by the Biliran Police after attempting to swim across the sea from Kawayan to Maripipi Island due to a lack of boat fare.

According to reports, Nathan ran out of money to pay for the boat ride and decided to swim instead. He was found floating halfway across the sea, wearing a life vest, after several concerned locals alerted authorities about a person drifting in the water. After the rescue, Nathan received medical assistance and chose to cancel his vacation and return home. The Kawayan Police also provided financial help to ensure his safe return to Ormoc City.

Swimming in the middle of the sea can be extremely dangerous, especially for someone who is not trained or prepared for open water conditions. One of the greatest risks is the presence of strong currents or rip tides, which can pull a swimmer far from shore without them realizing it. These currents are difficult to resist, even for experienced swimmers, and can quickly lead to exhaustion.

Another danger is the distance itself. Unlike swimming in pools or near the shore, there is no place to rest in open waters. Long periods of swimming can lead to muscle cramps, fatigue, and even panic—all of which increase the risk of drowning. Moreover, immediate help is often unavailable in the open sea, as there are no lifeguards or bystanders nearby.

In addition, marine life such as jellyfish, sea urchins, or other sea creatures can pose threats, along with hazards like sharp rocks or corals. Sudden weather changes, including storms or large waves, can also worsen conditions quickly.

Due to these many dangers, it is essential to take safety seriously. Open water swimming should only be done with proper training, safety equipment, and preferably with a companion or guide.
