Teacher Expresses Disappointment Over Voters’ Trash Left in Classroom After Voting

Teacher Saddened by Trash Left in Classroom After Voting

RAQUEZA MORTIZ JEMINO – A teacher who served as Electoral Board support staff during the 2025 elections, shared her deep frustration after voters left a classroom filled with trash following its use as a polling precinct. The incident took place at Poloyogan Integrated School in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

In a Facebook post, Jemino uploaded photos and videos showing food wrappers, plastic cups, flyers, and other litter scattered across the classroom floor and desks—despite the presence of trash bins both inside and outside the room. She lamented that many voters ignored these bins, saying in the local dialect, “Kadaghan sa basurahan sulod sa room pero, murag walay nakaila.”

After a long day of assisting voters, Jemino was left alone to clean up the mess. What upset her most was not just the physical clutter but the lack of discipline and respect shown by the public in an educational space. For Jemino, a classroom is more than just a temporary voting center—it is a sacred space for learning and growth, and it deserves respect.

She emphasized that real change does not end with casting a vote. “The incident shows that bringing change doesn’t stop at the ballot. It also includes small actions, like cleaning up after ourselves,” she shared.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, classrooms are used as polling precincts because they are practical, accessible, and cost-effective. Public schools are found in most communities, making them easy to reach. Since they are government-owned, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) avoids rental costs. Classrooms provide a suitable setup for voting, with desks and enough space for voters. The law allows public buildings to be used for elections, and teachers often serve on the Electoral Board, making coordination easier. Schools are also seen as safe and neutral spaces, helping ensure orderly and efficient elections.
