Mermaid Performer Nearly Drowns During Show

Performer Suffers Lung Injury After Mermaid Show Incident

CHINA – A mermaid-themed show at Taiyuan Ocean World in Shanxi turned into a terrifying incident when a performer, identified as Ms. Feng, nearly drowned during her act—an emergency initially mistaken by the audience as part of the performance.

In a video released by GMA News, Ms. Feng was seen floating face down in the aquarium, her hands positioned in front of her chest. Because the pose appeared deliberate, spectators assumed it was part of the act and continued watching. For several tense moments, no one realized she was already in distress. It wasn’t until a staff member jumped into the tank that the severity of the situation became clear.

Ms. Feng was quickly pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed that she had suffered from pulmonary edema—a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs—after accidentally inhaling water. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring and treatment.

Initial reports suggested she may have lost consciousness due to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), but management later clarified that the actual cause was equipment failure. According to a statement from Taiyuan Ocean World, Ms. Feng’s flippers and goggles came off during the performance, making it difficult for her to stay afloat or surface for air, which led to the near-drowning incident.

The event has since sparked discussions online about the safety and emergency preparedness of aquatic shows. Many netizens are calling for stricter safety protocols and better equipment to protect performers, especially in high-risk acts like underwater dancing.

As of now, there are no new updates on Ms. Feng’s condition, but the incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of safety in live aquatic performances.
