Mayor Treñas Defends Iloilo Coffee Shop from Viral Criticism
JERRY P. TREÑAS – The Iloilo City Mayor addressed a controversial TikTok video posted by content creator Euleen Castro, also known as “Pambansang Yobab.” The video, which criticized the popular local coffee shop Coffeebreak Cafe International, Inc., has sparked strong reactions from the public, particularly among Ilonggos.
In her video, Euleen Castro harshly criticized the food and drinks served at Coffeebreak, saying that none of the items they ordered were tasty. Her review included strong and offensive language, which many viewers found disrespectful. She even asked locals to recommend better coffee shops in Iloilo.
In response, Coffeebreak Cafe released an official statement thanking Castro for her feedback but expressing disappointment over her use of inappropriate language. They emphasized that while they welcome constructive criticism to help them improve, they believe it should be expressed respectfully. The cafe also noted that they have been serving coffee lovers for 20 years and have never received such an insulting comment from a customer before. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue providing a welcoming and satisfying experience for all their guests, and to grow from feedback shared with sincerity and respect.

As the video continued to circulate online, netizens—especially Ilonggos—strongly reacted against Castro’s remarks. Some even suggested declaring her a “persona non grata” in the city.

Mayor Treñas, in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, appealed to fellow Ilonggos to stop sharing or reposting the video. He encouraged those who had already shared it to consider deleting their posts. The mayor emphasized the values that define Ilonggos—respect, kindness, and support for one another—and said that spreading negativity does not reflect who they are as a community. He urged the public to be responsible and respectful online.
To show his support for Coffeebreak, Mayor Treñas shared a photo of himself having breakfast and coffee at the cafe with his son, Paolo, and Iloilo Governor Toto Defensor, saying that nothing beats good conversation over a warm cup of coffee.
As of now, Castro has not issued any response or statement, and the video remains on her TikTok account.
