Known to many as “Ka Freddie,” Ferdinand Pascual Aguilar is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Original Pilipino Music (OPM). He began composing songs at the age of 14 and later pursued a music career after leaving his college studies in Electrical Engineering. Aguilar first gained popularity in the 1970s as a folk singer in Manila. He drew inspiration from global artists like Cat Stevens and James Taylor, as well as from his deep Filipino roots and a desire to reflect national pride and social realities through his music.
His breakthrough song, “Anak” (1978), became the best-selling Philippine music record of all time, selling around 33 million copies worldwide. The song’s heartfelt lyrics about a child’s journey and parental love resonated with audiences around the globe. Aguilar also became known for his strong political stance during the Marcos dictatorship, most notably with his moving rendition of “Bayan Ko,” which became the anthem of the 1986 People Power Revolution. His songs often tackled themes of injustice, poverty, and patriotism.
