Leni Robredo Endorses Former Rivals in 2025 Elections
LENI ROBREDO – The former Vice President has officially endorsed former Senator Manny Pacquiao for the 2025 senatorial elections under the “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas” coalition.
In a statement on April 23, Robredo praised Pacquiao for his kindness and trustworthiness. This endorsement followed their joint participation in a house-to-house outreach activity in Naga City, where Robredo is running for mayor. Despite their political rivalry during the 2022 presidential elections, Robredo reaffirmed her support for Pacquiao, stating, “We will always be behind Manny Pacquiao,” while highlighting his sincerity and commitment.
In addition to Pacquiao, Robredo also expressed her support for former Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr., a senatorial candidate under the same political alliance. Robredo acknowledged her long-standing friendship with Abalos and commended his support for Naga City, particularly during Typhoon Kristine. “He came here several times to help,” she said, emphasizing his quiet but reliable assistance. As she campaigns for mayor, Robredo urged her supporters to vote for Abalos in the upcoming elections.

However, Robredo’s endorsements may not sit well with some of her supporters, known as “kakampinks”—a group formed during her 2022 presidential campaign. Political analyst Associate Professor Jean Encinas-Franco noted that while some followers may disagree with her endorsements, Robredo likely has strategic reasons for her choices. “Get as many votes as they can in Bicol and the rest of the kakampinks nationwide,” Franco explained. Despite possible backlash, Robredo remains confident in her decisions, underscoring that her endorsements are rooted in genuine respect and long-standing relationships.

Meanwhile, the 2025 Philippine elections are scheduled for May 12, 2025. Voters will elect 12 new senators, all 317 district representatives, and 63 party-list members, along with thousands of local officials including governors, mayors, and councilors. The Bangsamoro Parliament elections are set for October 13, 2025. The campaign period begins on February 11 for national candidates and on March 28 for local candidates, ending on May 10. Elected officials will officially assume office on June 30, 2025. An estimated 68 million Filipinos are expected to vote.
