Comelec Seeks to Disqualify MisOr Gov. Peter Unabia Over ‘Nurse Joke’

Gov. Peter Unabia Faces Disqualification After Controversial Remark

COMELEC – The Commission on Elections, through its Task Force SAFE, has filed a disqualification petition against Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia. The case was filed on Monday, April 28, in response to a controversial remark he made during a campaign rally earlier this month, which many viewed as sexist and discriminatory.

During the rally held on April 3, Governor Unabia claimed that their provincial nursing scholarship program was intended only for “beautiful women.” He added that male patients would feel worse if cared for by what he described as “ugly nurses.” His remarks sparked backlash from the public and various sectors, who found the comments offensive and disrespectful, particularly toward women and those in the nursing profession.

In his speech, Unabia stated in a mix of Bisaya and Filipino, “Kining nursing, para ra ni sa mga babaye, dili pwede ang lalaki. At, kato pa gyud mga babaye nga gwapa.” He continued, “Dili man pwede ang maot, kay kung luya na ang mga lalaki, atubangon sa pangit nga nurse, naunsa naman, mosamot atong sakit ana.”

Comelec’s disqualification petition is based on the argument that such statements not only violate ethical standards but also contradict the values expected of public officials. The Commission emphasized that public servants should promote inclusivity and respect—not discrimination based on appearance or gender.

Governor Unabia is now the second local candidate to face a disqualification case in this election cycle. Previously, Pasig congressional candidate Atty. Christian Sia was also served a petition due to controversial remarks he made about single mothers.

The case against Unabia is currently under review, and the COMELEC will determine whether his statements constitute grounds for disqualification under election laws and standards of moral fitness.
