OPM Icon Pilita Corrales Dies at 85

PILITA CORRALES – The Philippine music industry is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its most cherished icons, lovingly known as “Asia’s Queen of Songs.” She passed away at the age of 85, a loss that was shared by her granddaughter, actress Janine Gutierrez, in a heartfelt post on Facebook on April 12.

In her tribute, Janine expressed how Pilita, whom she fondly called “Mami” and “Mamita,” was not only a renowned music legend but also a kind-hearted woman who touched many lives with her warmth and generosity. Janine wrote, “Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity.” She also asked everyone to join in prayers as they celebrated Pilita’s life, a life filled with love for family and a deep passion for music.

Pilita was celebrated for her clear, elegant voice and unique stage presence, often remembered for her signature move of slightly bending backward while singing. She began her music career at just 16 years old and quickly became a trailblazer in the Filipino music scene. Her fame extended internationally, especially in Australia, where she topped the charts with her hit “Come Closer to Me” in the late 1950s. In 1972, Pilita was recognized as the Best Performer at the Tokyo Music Festival.

Pilita’s legacy extended beyond music. She was a mother to actress Jackie Lou Blanco and Ramon “Monching” Gutierrez, the father of Janine. Her songs, including “Rosas Pandan,” “Usahay,” “A Million Thanks to You,” “Matud Nila,” and “Kapantay ay Langit,” continue to resonate with Filipinos, preserving her place in the heart of the nation. Pilita Corrales leaves behind an enduring legacy of love, music, and family, which will be remembered and cherished by all.
