Sarah Balabagan Reacts to Arnold Clavio’s Comments on Duterte
SARAH BALABAGAN – The former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), spoke out against journalist Arnold Clavio after he criticized former President Rodrigo Duterte.
In a Facebook post, Sarah reminded Arnold about the power of prayer, saying she was once saved because of it. She was referring to her experience in the United Arab Emirates, where she was sentenced to death between 1994 and 1997 for defending herself against her employer’s attack. Due to the efforts of the Philippine government and many concerned Filipinos, her sentence was reduced to one year in prison and 100 lashes.
Sarah also reiterated her past accusations against Arnold, whom she had accused of taking advantage of her. Directly addressing him, she said, “Arnold Huwag mong maliitin Ang power ng UNITY PRAYERS! “the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective” is James 5:16. Ako mismo ay bunga ng unity prayers ng mga Filipino. Pero pinagsamantalahan mo lang at inuto!”

Her statement was a response to Arnold’s comments questioning the prayer rallies being held for Duterte, who was known for his negative views on religion.
In 2020, Sarah revealed that Arnold was the father of her first child. At the time, Arnold was covering her case, which led to them becoming close. She recalled how Arnold, known for his humor, made her laugh even in difficult moments. Having just been released from prison, she admitted she was vulnerable, though she did not use it as an excuse for what happened between them.

Meanwhile, in the 1990s, Sarah Balabagan’s story captured worldwide attention after she was sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for killing her employer in self-defense. She was only 14 years old when she left the Philippines to work abroad, hoping to support her family. However, instead of a better future, she faced abuse at the hands of her employer. In an act of survival, she defended herself, leading to his death.
Her case stirred outrage and compassion, prompting strong diplomatic efforts and widespread public support. Because of these efforts, her death sentence was eventually reduced. In 1996, she was granted a pardon and finally returned home to the Philippines.
