Powerful Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand Kills Nearly 150

Myanmar and Thailand Hit by a Devastating Earthquake

MASSIVE TREMOR – A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, claiming nearly 150 lives and injuring hundreds. The 7.7-magnitude quake, followed by a strong aftershock, caused severe destruction, including collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and fallen bridges. A tall building under construction in Bangkok also collapsed, highlighting the severity of the disaster.

Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, confirmed 144 deaths and over 700 injuries, warning that the numbers could rise. In a rare move, he requested international assistance and called for large-scale relief efforts. The country, already struggling with a prolonged civil war, is facing significant challenges in managing the crisis.

The government declared a state of emergency in the six hardest-hit areas. The World Health Organization (WHO) described the situation as a “major threat to life and health.” Hospitals, particularly in Naypyidaw, were overwhelmed with patients. Doctors and nurses worked tirelessly, with some treating the injured outside due to damage to hospital buildings. Rescuers in the capital attempted to save a mother and son trapped under debris, but the widespread destruction made their efforts difficult.

In Thailand, a 30-story building collapsed, killing three people and trapping many others. Rescue teams worked through the night under bright lights, searching for survivors. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra ordered safety inspections for all buildings in Bangkok and declared an emergency zone in the city. Public transportation was disrupted, leaving thousands of people stranded. Parks remained open overnight to provide shelter for those unable to return home.

The earthquake was felt in several countries, including China, India, Bangladesh, and Cambodia. Offers of aid quickly arrived from India, France, and the European Union. The WHO began sending medical supplies from Dubai. Pope Francis expressed his condolences to the victims.

Myanmar has a history of strong earthquakes, with the Sagaing Fault being a known hotspot. A 6.8-magnitude quake in Bagan in 2016 killed three people and damaged ancient temples. However, the scale of this disaster is far worse, leaving the region in urgent need of assistance.
