Jinggoy Estrada Questions CIDG Chief Torre Over Duterte’s Arrest Procedure

Jinggoy Estrada Slams CIDG Chief Over Duterte’s Arrest

JINGGOY ESTRADA – Senator Jinggoy Estrada grilled CIDG Chief Torre over the controversial handling of former President Duterte’s arrest.

Senator Jinggoy Estrada recently raised concerns over the manner in which former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on March 11 at Villamor Air Base. The operation was led by PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Director, Police Brigadier General Nicolas Torre III.

During a Senate hearing, Sen. Jinggoy questioned Torre’s conduct during the arrest, particularly highlighting Torre’s controversial statement, “Hihilahin ko ‘yan! Hihilahin ko ‘yan!” (I will drag him! I will drag him!). Estrada expressed dismay over the perceived lack of respect shown towards Duterte during the operation.

In response, Torre clarified that his remark was directed at Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, not Duterte. Torre insisted that there was no intention to disrespect the former president and that the arrest was carried out according to protocol.

Senator Estrada also raised the issue of Vice President Sara Duterte being denied entry to the base during the arrest, despite Duterte himself requesting her presence. Estrada argued that as Duterte’s daughter and a lawyer, VP Sara should have been allowed to enter, especially since Duterte had not yet been formally arrested at that time.

Senator Imee Marcos supported Estrada’s position, citing that under Philippine law, direct family members are permitted to visit an individual in custody. Marcos and Estrada questioned why this right was denied to Duterte, emphasizing that the same consideration should have been extended to a former head of state.

Estrada reflected on his own past experience of being arrested, recalling the difficult emotions it triggered. He stressed that Duterte, given his status as a former president and his advanced age, should have been treated with greater respect and courtesy.

The hearing ended with Estrada urging the PNP to review their protocols regarding the arrest of high-profile individuals, particularly those who have served in the highest office of the country. He emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity and respect even during difficult legal procedures.
