Ex-Pres. Rodrigo Duterte Backs Petition of VP Sara Duterte
RODRIGO DUTERTE – The former President is one of the lawyers who signed the petition filed by Vice Pres. Sara Duterte against the impeachment complaint.
Currently, one of the loudest issues in the Philippine political arena is the impeachment moves against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. After several impeachment complaints have been filed, the House of Representatives has voted to impeach the Vice President from office.
Two hundred fifteen (215) lawmakers in the House of Representatives approved the impeachment of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. One of those who signed the impeachment rap is presidential son and Ilocos Norte 1st District congressman Sandro Marcos.
On the other side, Deputy Majority Leader and representative of ACT-CIS Partylist Erwin Tulfo is one of those who did not sign the impeachment rap against Duterte. According to him, with the election fast approaching, he wants to avoid any appearance of bias in the judging of the case. He stressed that there is a chance that he will be a senator-judge if he will sign the impeachment rap.
Four (4) impeachment complaints have been filed against Vice Pres. Duterte. The complainants came from different walks of life. There are civic society leaders as well as Catholic priests and members of the religious sectors who were behind the impeachment complaints.
The late former senator Ninoy Aquino’s grandson, Kiko Dee, is also one of the complainants behind Duterte’s impeachment complaint. Prior to it, Kiko has reacted to Duterte accusing the Marcos family of being behind the death of his late grandfather. He wanted his family to be spared from the tirades.
Recently, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte filed a petition for certiorari and prohibition before the Supreme Court. It seeks to block the impeachment trial and challenges the validity and constitutionality of the fourth impeachment complaint against her. One of the lawyers who signed the petition is former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte.
Aside from former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, based on a report on GMA News, five (5) other lawyers have signed the 36-page petition filed by VP Sara before the Supreme Court. The petition for certiorari and prohibition was filed before the high court on Tuesday, February 18.
Based on the report, through the petition filed, Vice Pres. Duterte appeals to the Supreme Court to nullify and set aside the fourth impeachment complaint filed against her citing its alleged unconstitutionality. She also wants the high court to issue a temporary restraining order and/or writ of preliminary injunction.
The high court has confirmed receiving the petition but has yet to discuss it during the recent en banc session. Recently, a congressman has apologized for signing the impeachment complaint against VP Sara Duterte.
