Agriculture Course Defended by Pinoy Dairy Farm Assistant in NZ
TROY DUHALNGON – A Filipino dairy farm assistant in New Zealand spoke out against the underestimation of agriculture as a field of study. In a viral Facebook post on January 25, 2025, he addressed those who look down on the profession, sharing his journey as an agriculture graduate from Ifugao State University, Class of 2021.
Troy recalled frequently hearing belittling remarks during college, such as questions about his future job prospects and comments suggesting he was wasting his intelligence. However, he firmly believes there is nothing wrong with farming and wants to educate others on its vast importance.
He emphasized that while he may not personally feed people, farmers do. The rice on the table, the meat, and the fruits people enjoy are all products of agriculture. He called farmers “unrecognized heroes” and highlighted their crucial role in society.
Troy also debunked the misconception that agriculture is an easy course. He explained that it is both an art and a science, involving experimental research, studies on fertilizers and livestock feeds, and agribusiness economics. He shared that agriculture students conduct scientific experiments, analyze livestock nutrition, and even defend their theses in formal business attire.
Thanks to his degree, Troy has worked in the United States, Israel, and New Zealand, proving that agriculture opens doors to countless opportunities, including international training, internships, and even high-paying jobs.
He also refuted the idea that agriculture is for the academically weak, emphasizing that it requires skills in research, science, math, chemistry, and business. He pointed out that agriculture graduates take a three-day board exam, further proving its difficulty.
In a lighthearted challenge, he dared critics to say it is easy after experiencing its rigorous demands. He urged the public to stop the stigma and stereotypes against agriculture, stressing that every field of study has its own challenges.
To students feeling discouraged, he offered encouragement, reminding them that they do not need anyone’s approval. He called agriculture a strong profession, advising them to use criticism as motivation.
