Rider’s License Revoked by LTO for ‘Superman’ Stunt on Marilaque Highway
LTO – The Land Transportation Office has revoked the driver’s license of a motorcycle rider who performed a dangerous stunt known as the “Superman” along Marilaque Highway in Tanay, Rizal. Rico Buyawan, the rider who survived a crash caught on video, was deemed unfit to operate a vehicle after performing this reckless stunt on a public road.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II emphasized that a driver’s license is a privilege that carries the responsibility of ensuring road safety and being a responsible driver. He stressed that public roads are not suitable for dangerous stunts, as such actions put the lives of others at risk.
The incident occurred in January when a rider, attempting the same stunt, tragically lost his life along a section of the Marikina-Rizal-Laguna-Quezon (Marilaque) Road. The rider was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The video of the crash showed Buyawan and another rider performing the stunt, only to lose control and crash into parked motorcycles and bystanders. Six people were injured in the aftermath.
The “Superman” stunt involves lying prone on the motorcycle seat and briefly raising the legs while speeding along curves. The police investigation revealed that the fatal rider did not have a driver’s license, while Buyawan was found guilty of reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without authorization. As a result, his driver’s license was revoked.
In response, the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) announced it would increase personnel deployment, along with Tanay Police, to prevent further incidents. They also warned that anyone caught engaging in racing or similar reckless behavior along the Marilaque Highway could face criminal charges. Additionally, the local government of Tanay is considering an ordinance to prevent bystanders from gathering along the road to ensure public safety.
