LTO Criticized for ‘Harassing’ and Arresting a Farmer in Bohol
BOHOL – A farmer in Panglao was allegedly harassed and roughly arrested by officers from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Flying Squad, causing public anger.
He was riding his motorcycle when he was stopped at a checkpoint. The officers found a knife in his possession, which he said was a necessary tool for his farming work.
Even though he repeatedly explained that he needed the knife for his job, the officers kept scolding him. In a now-viral video, he was heard pleading, “Farmer ko, sir!” but they ignored him. Witnesses say he was treated unfairly, and some believe his arrest was too harsh. While reports say he had been drinking, his family defended him, explaining that alcohol was his way of coping with personal problems. They also insisted that he was not being violent or causing any trouble.

Former Panglao Vice Mayor Brian Velasco, the farmer’s brother, is asking for an investigation into the LTO officers involved. He pointed out that his brother was peacefully sitting on his motorcycle when the officers approached. He also said their version of the arrest does not match what witnesses saw.

This incident, which has gone viral online, has raised concerns about how authorities conduct checkpoint operations. Many are asking whether law enforcers are truly being fair or if they are abusing their power. While carrying a knife in public may have legal consequences, critics argue that the farmer’s work and reasons should have been considered before treating him so harshly.

Local officials and concerned citizens are urging the government to look into the LTO’s actions and make sure similar cases are handled with more kindness and professionalism. The public is calling for justice, saying that farmers, who play an important role in society, deserve respect and understanding.
