Diwata Under Fire for Mocking Indigenous Attire in Benguet

NCIP Calls Out Diwata for Insensitive Acts in Benguet

DIWATA – The internet personality, whose real name is Deo Balbuena, is facing backlash for his actions during a recent visit to Benguet.

The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) condemned Diwata for mocking Indigenous Peoples (IP) by wearing traditional Igorot attire while making exaggerated gestures and sounds that misrepresented the culture. In a video he posted online, Diwata was seen performing so-called “Indian shouts” and movements unrelated to true Igorot traditions. He also referred to the attire as a “costume,” which the NCIP deemed culturally insensitive and irresponsible.

The commission emphasized that such incidents highlight the ongoing struggle to correct misconceptions about Indigenous communities. “The incident highlights the persistent challenges in the Information and Education Campaigns (IECs) aimed at decolonizing the mindset of the Filipino population towards ICCs/IPs,” NCIP-Cordillera stated.

The NCIP urged business owners, particularly those renting out traditional clothing, to educate tourists on the proper way to respect and use indigenous materials. They called for greater responsibility in preserving the dignity of cultural expressions. As of now, Diwata, the social media personality, has not responded to the NCIP’s statement.
