Aftermath of the Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake in Southern Leyte
SOUTHERN LEYTE – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Southern Leyte on the morning of January 23, 2025, causing strong tremors across several provinces in the Visayas region.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported that the earthquake occurred at 7:39 a.m., with its epicenter located 6 kilometers south-southeast of San Francisco, Southern Leyte, at a shallow depth of 14 kilometers.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, generated varying intensities across the region. San Francisco experienced the strongest shaking at Intensity VI, while nearby towns, including Anahawan, Hinunangan, and Padre Burgos, reported Intensity V. Lesser tremors were felt in parts of Leyte, Cebu, Surigao del Norte, and as far as Cagayan de Oro. Instrumental readings recorded Intensity V in some municipalities in Southern Leyte and Intensity IV in Maasin City and Surigao City.
The earthquake caused noticeable structural damage and disruptions. In San Francisco, cracks were discovered in the municipal gym and the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) building. Local officials are currently assessing the extent of these damages to ensure public safety.
Additionally, portions of the national highway in San Francisco were reported to have risen and cracked, affecting transportation. Response teams have been dispatched to inspect and confirm these reports. Assessments are also ongoing in various barangays to determine further damages and immediate needs.
In Limasawa, local officials have begun evaluating potential impacts. Residents are advised to remain vigilant as aftershocks are expected in the coming days.
