Darryl Yap Responds to Cyber Libel Charges Filed by Vic Sotto

Darryl Yap: “Katotohanan lang ang depensa sa lahat ng Katanungan”

DARRYL YAP – The controversial director responded to the cyber libel charges filed against him by comedian and television host Vic Sotto.

Earlier, Vic Sotto filed 19 cyber libel charges against Darryl Yap at the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court, seeking ₱35 million in damages for his inclusion in Yap’s film The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma.

In his complaint, Sotto accuses Yap of intentionally posting harmful and defamatory content on social media, particularly on Yap’s Facebook pages. Sotto claims these posts have damaged his reputation, leading to public mockery and emotional distress. He argues that Yap, driven by a desire for attention and financial gain, irresponsibly accused him of being a rapist. Sotto emphasized that while freedom of expression is an important right, it should not harm another person’s reputation.

Sotto is seeking ₱20 million in moral damages for the emotional and psychological harm caused by the accusations, as well as ₱15 million in exemplary damages to discourage others from committing similar offenses. The case does not include claims for any potential loss of income from endorsement contracts that may have been affected by Yap’s posts.

Darryl Yap responded to Vic Sotto’s cyber libel charges by stating that everyone has the right to file a complaint and that no one has exclusive ownership over justice or the truth. He emphasized that, in the end, the truth will be the strongest defense.

Yap also pointed out that the truth about the accusations against Sotto can be traced back to various news articles, deleted videos, and old newspapers. Yap concluded by suggesting that the case will likely return to court, hinting at further legal developments.

Meanwhile, cyber libel refers to the act of defaming someone through online platforms, such as social media or websites. It is punishable under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175) and carries penalties of fines and imprisonment.
