PhilHealth Addresses Alleged Overspending for Christmas Party

PhilHealth Issues Official Statement on Claims by Dr. Tony Leachon

PHILHEALTH – The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation has addressed recent claims made by Dr. Tony Leachon regarding an alleged overspending for its Christmas party.

In its statement, PhilHealth explained that the accusations were based on incorrect information. The organization emphasized that it has been following an order from Malacañang to reduce holiday celebrations. To ensure compliance, PhilHealth issued a notice in November 2024 outlining the need to cut back on event expenses. As part of this, some activities were canceled, and the savings were redirected to assist communities affected by recent typhoons.

According to the organization, the expense details shared by Dr. Leachon, which are still not final, actually refer to PhilHealth’s planned 30th-anniversary celebrations in 2025, not the Christmas party. The anniversary, themed “Panatag Kami Dito!”, will coincide with National Health Insurance Month, as declared by the government. These year-long activities will involve PhilHealth employees, stakeholders, and, most importantly, its members.

PhilHealth reassured the public that the budget for these events is reasonable, complies with government spending rules, and will be spent in accordance with the guidelines of RA 9184. The purpose is to celebrate this milestone year meaningfully while raising awareness about ongoing improvements, particularly those enhancing benefit packages under the Universal Health Care law.

PhilHealth also reminded Dr. Leachon to be more careful when making public statements to avoid misleading the public. The organization reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that members’ funds are used properly.

Meanwhile, PhilHealth is a government organization in the Philippines that ensures Filipinos can afford healthcare when they need it. By offering health insurance, PhilHealth helps cover costs like hospital stays, surgeries, maternity care, and even some outpatient services. All Filipinos, whether employed or self-employed, are required to be members and contribute to the system. This way, everyone can access necessary medical care without worrying about high costs, giving peace of mind to families across the country.
