Mark Bautista Defends Sarah Geronimo Over Lyric Change

Sarah Geronimo Criticized for Lyric Change, Mark Bautista Reacts

MARK BAUTISTA – The singer defended Sarah Geronimo after she received criticism for changing a lyric in her cover of Chappell Roan’s popular song “Good Luck, Babe.” Some fans felt that the change altered the song’s original LGBTQ+ theme.

During her performance, Geronimo modified the line “you can kiss a hundred boys in bars” to “you can kiss a hundred girls in bars.” This adjustment led to claims that she made the queer-themed song more suited to a heterosexual perspective. Many expressed disappointment, highlighting the need to maintain LGBTQ+ representation in the media.

One social media user called the change “inappropriate,” arguing that the song’s main message focuses on queer love. Another user acknowledged that singers are free to make creative choices but stressed that such changes should respect the song’s original meaning.

In response, Bautista explained that it is common for artists to adjust lyrics to match their personal style and interpretation. He emphasized that such modifications are not intended to disrespect the original composer or change the song’s intended message. “Most singers do this to feel authentic when they do their own version. It has to align with their truth. It’s not to undermine the composer or the original message of the song,” Bautista said.

Supporters of Geronimo also shared their thoughts, questioning the intensity of the criticism. One fan argued that her version doesn’t take away from the song’s original meaning. “That’s her own cover and perspective of the song. Like you don’t have to relate to her cover and just go back to the original song right?” the fan stated.

Chappell Roan, the song’s creator, previously shared that “Good Luck, Babe” is about wishing someone well while they struggle to accept their feelings for another woman. The song’s deep emotional theme has resonated with the LGBTQ+ community, making the lyric change a sensitive matter for some listeners.
