ABS-CBN Lawyer Says Jam Villanueva May Face Charges for Leaking Maris and Anthony’s Convo
ATTY. JOJI V. ALONSO – The legal counsel of ABS-CBN Star Magic stated that Jam Villanueva may face charges for leaking the conversation between Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings.
According to the lawyer, Maris and Anthony may file charges against Jam Villanueva, his ex-girlfriend, for cyber libel and violation of the Data Privacy Act (Republic Act 10173). This follows Jam’s recent release of a series of private conversations between Maris and Anthony on December 3, which quickly went viral. The screenshots, reportedly taken from Anthony’s phone, raised concerns about privacy breaches.
The Supreme Court issued a decision on the same day, December 3, ruling that chat logs and videos could be used as evidence in court. This legal move has led to speculation that Jam may face serious charges, especially after ABS-CBN Star Magic’s legal counsel, Atty. Joji V. Alonso, posted a statement hinting that Maris and Anthony might file a lawsuit.
Atty. Joji clarified that, assuming the screenshots were genuine, Maris and Anthony had committed no crime. While their actions might be seen as morally wrong, the two were not married to their respective partners. The legal counsel acknowledged Jam’s emotional pain but emphasized that violating the law by releasing private conversations is not justified. He pointed out that Jam could face charges for cyber libel and data privacy violations.
The phrase “Nemo jus sibi dicere potest,” meaning “no one can declare the law for themselves,” was used to reinforce that Jam’s actions were illegal, regardless of her feelings of betrayal. While Jam deleted the posts from her Instagram stories, likely realizing the potential legal consequences, the screenshots had already been widely shared.
Maris and Anthony, popular for their on-screen chemistry in the series Can’t Buy Me Love with Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano, are currently working together on an upcoming project with Richard Gutierrez, Daniel Padilla, and Ian Veneracion. They are also part of a film set to be released during the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival on December 25.
