After Congratulating Sofronio Vasquez for his Historic Win on The Voice USA, It’s Showtime and ABS-CBN were Accused of “Credit Grabbing”
SOFRONIO VASQUEZ – ABS-CBN’s noontime show “It’s Showtime” and the network itself were accused of being “credit grabbers” after the Filipino-American singer won The Voice USA Season 26.
Sofronio, who was a contestant in “Tawag ng Tanghalan,” a segment of It’s Showtime, made history as the first Filipino and Asian to win The Voice USA. The 32-year-old, mentored by Michael Bublé, triumphed over fellow finalists Danny Joseph, Jeremy Beloate, Shye, and Sydney Sterlace, securing the grand prize of $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group. During his final performance, Sofronio sang “Unstoppable” by Sia and “A Million Dreams,” showcasing his vocal range and emotional depth.
Following his victory, Sofronio dedicated his success to his family, especially his mother, revealing plans to use the prize money to provide her with a better life. His win quickly became a trending topic on social media, reflecting the widespread support and pride felt by fans worldwide.
During his Tawag ng Tanghalan stint, he won as the third runner-up. After that competition, he became a coach for contestants, maintaining his connection with the show. When Sofronio won The Voice USA, the Showtime hosts celebrated his achievement, sending congratulations.
However, a netizen known as “Sarcastic Risen” criticized the show’s apparent opportunism, posting, “Matapos ligwakin sa TNT, @itsShowtimeNa proud na proud sa pagaangkin kay Sofronio Vasquez ngayong nanalo na siya sa The Voice US.” The social media post triggered a wave of diverse reactions from netizens. Some defended the show, arguing that Sofronio was never truly ignored and remained close to the TNT (Tawag ng Tanghalan) community. Others criticized what they perceived as a pattern of “credit grabbing” by ABS-CBN.
As of now, neither Showtime nor ABS-CBN has officially responded to the accusations.
