The Truth Behind “Humanap Ka ng Panget” by Andrew E.

Andrew E. Addresses Plagiarism Allegations on “Humanap Ka ng Panget”

ANDREW E. – The legendary hip-hop artist responded to long-standing accusations that his 1990 hit song “Humanap Ka ng Panget” was copied from the 1988 American rap song “Find An Ugly Woman” by Cash Money & Marvelous. In an interview on Fast Talk With Boy Abunda (November 18, 2024), the rapper did not outright deny the claims but questioned the basis of the accusations.

He explained that “Find An Ugly Woman” itself was inspired by Jimmy Soul’s 1963 song “If You Wanna Be Happy,” suggesting that such connections are part of musical evolution. However, he did not mention that Jimmy Soul’s song was also influenced by “Ugly Woman,” a 1933 track by Trinidadian artist Roaring Lion.

In a 2022 interview, Andrew E. shared the creative process behind “Humanap Ka ng Panget.” He revealed that he wanted to address societal perceptions, particularly how many Filipinos feel unattractive and experience rejection. The song, according to him, was a way to uplift and empower listeners by challenging traditional beauty standards. “Beauty is in the heart,” he emphasized.

Released on January 1, 1990, Andrew E.’s debut album Andrew E. Rhyme + Andrew = Party coincidentally shared thematic similarities with Cash Money & Marvelous’s 1988 debut album Where’s The Party At. Both used “party” in their titles, but he attributes this to coincidence rather than imitation.

“Humanap Ka ng Panget” became a cultural phenomenon, leading to a hit movie adaptation in March 1991 and cementing Andrew E.’s status in the Philippine entertainment industry. Despite the backlash, he remains confident in his artistry, asserting that the song’s success stems from its relatability and positive message.

While the controversy surrounding “Humanap Ka ng Panget” persists, Andrew stands by his work, viewing the allegations as part of the broader narrative of musical influence and evolution rather than outright plagiarism.
