Super Typhoon Ofel 8 AM Update from PAGASA (Nov. 14, 2024): Signal No. 5 Raised in Cagayan

PAGASA 8 AM Update on Super Typhoon Ofel

Super Typhoon Ofel (internationally known as USAGI) has intensified significantly following rapid intensification, according to PAGASA’s latest bulletin issued at 8:00 AM on November 14, 2024.

Currently located approximately 165 kilometers east-northeast of Echague, Isabela, or 165 kilometers east-southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, Ofel now has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center, gusts reaching up to 230 km/h, and a central pressure of 935 hPa. Moving northwestward at 15 km/h, Ofel is bringing strong to typhoon-force winds extending up to 320 kilometers from its center.

Super Typhoon Ofel’s extreme winds pose a severe threat to northeastern Luzon, with Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 raised over northeastern Cagayan, signaling typhoon-force winds within 12 hours. Areas under TCWS Nos. 4, 3, 2, and 1 are also advised of varying levels of wind threats, from gale-force to storm-force winds, expected to cause impacts ranging from minimal to significant to life and property.

The heavy rainfall outlook warns of potential life-threatening flooding, while coastal areas face a heightened risk of storm surge, with water levels possibly reaching 1.0 to 3.0 meters in affected localities such as Batanes, Ilocos Norte, and parts of Cagayan. A gale warning remains in effect, advising all vessels against sea travel due to rough to high seas, especially along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon.

Super Typhoon Ofel is expected to make landfall along the eastern coast of Cagayan or northern Isabela this afternoon, with additional landfall or close passage over the Babuyan Islands before moving north towards the sea west of Batanes by tomorrow. The typhoon is projected to weaken as it approaches Taiwan and could dissipate into a low-pressure area over the Ryukyu Islands by early next week. Local officials urge residents in highly susceptible areas to follow evacuation and safety measures, as the typhoon’s impacts extend beyond its immediate path. The next bulletin of PAGASA is scheduled for release at 11:00 AM.
