Latest Update on Bagyong Pepito from PAGASA
BAGYONG PEPITO – Typhoon Pepito (international name: MAN-YI) continues to strengthen as it approaches Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas.
As of 7:00 AM on November 16, 2024, its center was located approximately 235 km east of Catarman, Northern Samar. Moving northwestward at 25 km/h, the typhoon carries maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and gusts of up to 215 km/h, with strong winds extending up to 440 km from its center. PAGASA has issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals across affected regions, warning of significant impacts.
Signal No. 3 has been raised over parts of the Bicol Region and Northern Samar, including Catanduanes, eastern Albay, and northern Eastern Samar. These areas can expect storm-force winds of 89-117 km/h, posing moderate to significant threats to life and property. Signal No. 2 covers wider areas, such as the rest of Camarines Sur, portions of Eastern Visayas, and northern Samar, where gale-force winds of 62-88 km/h may cause minor to moderate impacts. Meanwhile, Signal No. 1 is in effect for Metro Manila, parts of Central Luzon, and nearby provinces, where strong winds of 39-61 km/h may result in minimal to minor damage.
Bagyong Pepito also poses a high risk of life-threatening storm surges, with peak heights exceeding 3.0 meters in coastal areas of Bicol, Eastern Visayas, and Central Luzon. Sea travel remains extremely dangerous, as waves could reach up to 14 meters along Catanduanes and other eastern seaboards. Mariners are advised to stay in port or seek safe shelter.
Bagyong Pepito is forecast to make landfall in Catanduanes tonight or early tomorrow, though there remains a possibility of landfall along the eastern coasts of Camarines Sur, Albay, or Sorsogon. After traversing Luzon, it is expected to weaken into a severe tropical storm as it exits the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday. Residents in high-risk areas should brace for heavy rainfall, severe winds, and storm surges. Evacuations and safety measures are strongly recommended. PAGASA will issue further updates at 11:00 AM.
