Man Arrested for Robbing Grocery Store Due to Addiction to Online Casino
MANILA – A man, allegedly addicted to online casino gambling, was arrested for robbing a grocery store in Tondo, where he had once worked. The suspect, who had been fired from the store for issues with missing funds, stole over half a million pesos from the store’s vault.
The robbery occurred after hours when the store was closed. The suspect, dressed in a uniform, entered the store and hid behind a sack of garbage. Once the store was empty and locked, he began searching for tools. After finding the key to the vault, he opened it and took the cash. The next day, employees discovered the theft.
Investigations led the police to discover that the suspect had been a former employee who had been dismissed due to previous issues involving missing money. They also learned that he had developed an addiction to online casino gambling. Authorities tracked the suspect to his home on Lualhati Street in Tondo and recovered part of the stolen money, although it had been reduced due to his gambling losses.
The police found gambling transactions, including amounts such as 25,000 pesos, 19,000 pesos, and 6,000 pesos. In addition to the stolen money, the police recovered the grocery store’s CCTV black box and several tools that had been used in the theft.
According to GMA News, the suspect is currently in police custody, facing robbery charges, but he declined to provide a statement to the authorities.
Meanwhile, online casino gambling is addictive due to factors such as 24/7 accessibility, instant gratification, and gamified features like rewards and bonuses. Easy payment methods encourage impulsive spending, while gambling offers an escape from personal stress. Social features and the illusion of control keep players engaged, and small wins trigger dopamine, reinforcing the desire to keep gambling. These factors combine to create a cycle that is difficult to break, often leading to financial and emotional harm.
