Vilma Santos Responds to Political Dynasty Issues

Vilma Santos Addresses Political Dynasty Concerns

VILMA SANTOS – The “Star For All Seasons” addressed the issue of political dynasties amid her and her sons’ candidacies in the 2025 Batangas elections.

She clarified why her sons, Luis Manzano and Ryan Christian Recto, are also entering politics. Some netizens criticized this move, comparing it to other political families where multiple members hold or pursue government roles, suggesting her family might be following a similar pattern.

In response, Santos explained that she seeks continuity and trust in her work, while her sons bring the energy, fresh perspectives, and new ideas needed in governance. She emphasized that younger voices are essential to connecting with the current generation, especially Gen Z and millennials, who make up a significant portion of the population. Santos stated that working with her sons would help her better serve the Batangas community, stressing that it is ultimately up to the voters to decide. She also defended their qualifications, noting that they grew up immersed in public service and are guided by values of integrity and dedication.

Reflecting on her political career, Santos shared some of her experiences and challenges. She highlighted her decisions to stand her ground on significant issues, such as voting “No” on the ABS-CBN franchise renewal and opposing the reinstatement of the death penalty in the Philippines. These stances resulted in setbacks, such as her removal as chair of the House committee on civil service. She said these experiences strengthened her and helped her understand the importance of genuine public service, which she aims to pass on to her sons if they are elected.

Santos’s political career spans over two decades, beginning as mayor of Lipa City, later serving as Batangas governor for three terms, and eventually becoming the representative of Batangas’s sixth district. Her husband, Ralph Recto, has also served as a congressman and senator and is currently the Secretary of the Department of Finance. Santos acknowledges that while public scrutiny of political families is expected, she and her family are committed to earning the trust of Batangueños and providing competent service.
