Filipina Formerly Living in a Nipa Hut is Now a Walt Disney Legacy Awardee

RAKI VEGA – A Filipina vocalist who once lived in a nipa hut, recently received The Walt Disney Legacy Award, becoming the first Filipino to earn this recognition.

Her journey was featured in the latest episode of “Toni Talks,” aired on October 20. Raki shared her humble beginnings in Mandaue, Cebu, where she lived in a traditional bahay-kubo for 12 years. She described her childhood as simple, stating, “We may not grow up with fancy stuff po but I believe that we had everything. We had a home filled with love, with laughter and music.”

Raki expressed gratitude for her upbringing, saying it built her character and helped her appreciate life. She fondly remembered that there were times when they only had soy sauce as a viand because her father’s work as a landscaper required him to travel far for a living. Her mother was a full-time housewife who played a significant role in her life, teaching her to sing from a young age. Raki described her mother as a “frustrated singer” who served as both a mentor and teacher.

In 2023, Raki was awarded The Walt Disney Legacy Award, which acknowledges the contributions of exceptional cast, crew, Imagineers, and employees of Disney. This honor reflects her significant impact on the Disney community. Before receiving this award, Raki gained fame by winning the reality singing competition “Born Diva” in 2004.

Following her win, she ventured into the entertainment industry, signing with Star Records and releasing an album. She has also collaborated with prominent artists, including a duet with Kapuso singer-actor Christian Bautista and performing the theme song for the TV series “Lobo” alongside Kapamilya singer Martin Nievera.

Meanwhile, the Walt Disney Legacy Award is a prestigious recognition by The Walt Disney Company to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the company’s success and legacy. Established in 2000, the award is part of a global recognition program that celebrates the exceptional talent and dedication of Disney cast members, crew, imagineers, and employees.
