Super Typhoon Leon Update According to PAGASA
PAGASA – The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, reported on October 30, 2024, that Leon, also known internationally as Kong-rey, has developed into a super typhoon.
As of 11:00 AM on October 30, 2024, Super Typhoon LEON (KONG-REY) poses a significant threat to Extreme Northern Luzon as it continues to strengthen. The eye of the storm is located approximately 350 km east of Calayan, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds reaching 185 km/h and gusts up to 230 km/h. The storm is moving west-northwest at 10 km/h, and its powerful winds extend outward up to 600 km from the center.
In response to the storm’s intensity, several Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) have been issued. TCWS No. 3, indicating strong winds, has been raised for Batanes, the eastern portion of Babuyan Islands, and parts of northeastern mainland Cagayan, where wind speeds are expected to reach 89 to 117 km/h. This level of wind presents a moderate to significant threat to life and property. TCWS No. 2 applies to the remaining Babuyan Islands and parts of Isabela, where gale-force winds of 62 to 88 km/h pose a minor to moderate threat. TCWS No. 1 encompasses a wider area, including most of Luzon, with wind speeds between 39 to 61 km/h, indicating a minimal to minor threat.
Heavy rainfall and storm surge are also critical concerns. A significant risk of life-threatening storm surges of 2.0 to 3.0 meters above normal tide levels is expected over low-lying coastal areas of Batanes and the Babuyan Islands in the next 48 hours. Additionally, there is a gale warning in effect across the seaboards of Northern Luzon, along with rough sea conditions that make maritime travel extremely dangerous.
LEON is forecast to make landfall in Taiwan tomorrow, October 31, before turning northward toward the East China Sea. The storm will be at its peak intensity during its closest approach to Batanes. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to adhere to evacuation orders and other safety measures provided by local officials. The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be released at 2:00 PM today, offering updated information on this developing situation.
